BEX crash on startup

So I've had the game for a while and played it back when it was new and again after the advanced edition came out. Haven't played it since. I decided to start it up again after playing it a bit at a buddies house this past weekend. It refuses to start up, every time it sticks on the loading screen and then crashes with this error message:

Note, I'm on Windows 7, processor is an old AMD quad core at 2.85 ghz and my gfx card is a r9 380. This is the Steam version, same error on a GOG version though.

I've looked it up and I've tried everything I saw posted, I've tried running in compatibility mode and administrator mode, I've updated my video drivers, I've turned off the steam overlay, I've forced it into a smaller resolution and windowed it, I've tried the generic BEX fix of altering the DEP settings for FTL, I even tried running my buddies GOG version to see if it was some Steam hangup. Nothing. My computer is pretty much exactly the same machine that played it a few years ago only I'm running an r9 380 as opposed to an hd 6870. I'd really like to play again, more now that it won't let me, and I'm out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
