Since FTL is a space game I thought I'd mention an upcoming Indie project based on Xcom titled Xenonauts. Here's a link to the website!

A kickstarter event will be coming soon and the game is currently in alpha. So far it's been really well done so I would encourage all of you to check it out! If you join the forums feel free to add me as the one who referred you xD

I'v been playing the Xenonauts beta, you can get it with pre-purchase from Desura. I missed out on Xcom the first time around, so I don't know how much alike they are, but Xenonauts IS a good game. Its got a long ways to go, and I sort of worry about its success since Firaxis announced their big budget Xcom remake. Hopefully Xenonauts will have enough innovations to recommend itself on merits beyond "It's like Xcom!".

Fireaxis is doing a remake using the same lore etc, but soo much as been simplified here again that real Xcom fan will say Xenonauts has Xcom spirit much more than Firaxis one. Dont get me wrong tho, im pretty sure Firaxis one will be good and fun, Hell i loved UFO: After series! Ok... please... dont... beat me....

Yeah it's in discussion in the forums atm about what benefits to have at various levels and that sort of thing but it should be happening sometime fairly soon.

@ jocan - I agree! I think BOTH games will be good for their own reasons and I'm looking forward to playing both the full finished version of Xenonauts and the Xcom turn based remake by Firaxis. Fun times this fall!

Man. The first time I played XCom was in college in 2006. Playing it with 320x240 resolution (?) on my fancy computer... and it was still the first game in forever that made my whole body tense, palms sweaty, on the verge of panic. All while being a turn based game. It's never too late to play the greats, that game is amazing.
(I'll check out Xenonauts too. I had heard of it but I was going to wait until it looked more finished)
If you're having hull problems, I feel bad for you son. I've got 99 problems but a breach ain't one.

Xenonauts is still in alpha right now but beta will be sometime quite soon - they are working on the public beta build and press build (which will be the same build I think) right now. It's fabulous so far IMO. I really should finish playing the original xcom soon too I suppose xD

Buying it through the referal links on the xenonauts homepage will give the developer half a dollar worth of % more from buying the game then if you buy it through desura. ;) (It won't cost more, just give more to the dev)

After reading the thread "when is the FTL beta comming" on this forum I just feel I need to warn everyone before hopping over to Xenonauts.
The game is in an alpha stage. It's rapidly updateing the builds by includeing new feautures. This, to people that are not aware, means that it is RIDDLED with bugs and CTDs are common. People that want complete games should not buy into the Xenonaut alpha yet. (in the latest build there is a chance the game loops infinetly on the enemies turn.)

That being said the community is helping with identifying and providing workaround for theese bugs (a small modification to an xml file greatly reduces or even removes the occurance of the loop). Some people have even started up som preliminary mods. (extended background information about soldiers joining the Xenonaut cause for example)

It is a fun, helpful and active community so far and we would love to have anyone interested in the game join the community at http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com/forums/
