just like anything else in FTL, its about managing your crew and resources

suits should need to be fitted and have drawbacks to balance the extraordinary bonuses they provide

I would like the idea of Crew upgrades.

Maybe "Oxygen Internals" could be one of them? This would make them take less damage from vacuum.

I'd be for this assuming that it would be implemented via an upgrade system. With proper balancing of course.

There should be species who's atmosphere contains toxic elements or contains no Oxygen at all, or contains the right elements in the wrong proportions, or the atmosphere could be at a different density. There could also be other environmental factors like radiation: some species might be super-sensitive to the point where they can't tolerate any radiation of any kind, others might benefit from a specific mix of radiation types, and yet others might require very strong radiation of every kind just to stay alive. There could be different levels of artificial gravity. Some species may be aquatic, or live in lava. This would mean a system for managing the environmental requirements of each species, life-support systems that are specific to the needs or each species, and you would need space suits or something similar to board other species' ships, and perhaps extra gear too.
