I hope it will start with a BLII that shoots tiny BLII's as projectiles.

And its crew must be walking, upright BLIIs.

Holy crap! A weapon is just floating in space!
Hmm... That's not very exciting. It's just 900%.

Re: Previews from the impatient
Done some more work on the Slugs, they're now even fatter and can have fancy hats as any self respecting capitalist should:
Also, Rock monk hoods in action:
Finally, the face-fingered Mantis, that may have a Roman-style helmet and shield:
Engi still yet to do - they're hard. The accessories will obviously show up on the top down sprites as well as the portraits (haven't done it for Mantis or Crystal yet). I expect I'll release an accessory-free-aliens version as they may not be to everyone's taste. They're too fun for me to resist, though.
I love this, please make it into a total-conversion mod.

I guess it is time to make these posts slightly more interesting. Here are the room layouts for these three ships that I've done.
Burst Laser II - Difficult to vent middle rooms, as the door room can't be manned by a normal crew member when you do it. If you launch a boarding or hacking drone, it should fly out the barrel of the weapon. Teleporter is also on the barrel. You just need to pretend that you shoot your crew into the enemy ship when sending boarders.
Glaive Beam - Large shield despite all the rooms being on the left side.
Ion Blast II - I don't know why the teleporter doesn't directly connect with the clone bay, but the O2 room has green light. Since an Ion Burst II can't really do anything, I made this a boarding ship.
I'm not quite sure yet how many ships I'll be making, but I know I'm not at the halfway mark yet. I'm not really proud of these ships. I think I might be making them out of boredom.

But do they fire tiny BLII's?! Are the crew walking BLIIs?!! Does the Glaive Beam come equipped with a Glaive Beam? Answer us, man, answer us!

@ Tweevle:
Some amazing progress there. As you can probably imagine I'd love to integrate some of these portraits into Captains Editio, once you deem the ready to be released. Would you grant permission? You receive full credit of course. I'd probably mix your variants with Lord Trilobites, maybe even attempting multiple variants for some faction, via layering.

OMG I love that hat! I see the slugs in a totally different way now. I'm going to imagine them with western accents. Snake oil salesman!

Re: Previews from the impatient
I'm not terribly fond of the asymmetrical wing nacelles, but other than that it looks pretty neat.
