New Alien Race

The Lanius

Hello everyone.  As the new year approaches and with it the impending FTL: Advanced Edition release, we wanted to announce some of the other features in the free update.

The Lanius have rarely been seen in Federation Space, and no official diplomatic contact has ever been recorded. One widely held theory blames the Lanius for why there is so little evidence of ancient civilizations; the Lanius simply absorbed them.

Background

The Lanius are scavengers – metallic lifeforms that rely on the absorption of  minerals to sustain themselves. Their society ebbs and flows in hibernation cycles; they may lie dormant for many years, even while hurtling through space. As soon as they become aware of significant metal deposits they reawaken. Usually this occurs in the dying stages of a galactic civilization or in the wake of intergalactic war.

Reports of reawakened Lanius have appeared in many of the war-torn and abandoned sectors of Federation Space. Their arrival has created panic as they indiscriminately seek our sources of metal – although more diplomatic individuals have suggested that they can be reasoned with.

Gameplay

Individuals of the Lanius race do not require life support to live – they can survive in deep space unaided. In fact, their unique composition reacts strongly to artificial environments causing them to drain the oxygen within any compartment they inhabit. This is no doubt one reason they have had difficulty with diplomatic relations.

Additional Features

Other than new alien race, here are some more previously unannounced features:

Lanius Ship: New player ship with its own achievements and alternate layout.

Type C Ship Layouts: 8 of the original ships will have a third layout that capitalizes on the new content.  With the Lanius ship, that makes for a total of ten new starting ship designs.

Backup Battery Subsystem: Subsystem that can provide temporary reactor power in a pinch.

New Drones: Expanded drone options includes: the Shield Drone that generates a green super shield for your ship, the Anti-Combat Drone that shoots down enemy combat drones, and the Ion Intruder that blasts into the enemy ship and randomly ionizes systems while stunning and distracting crew.

Gameplay Refinements: Doors and Sensors can be manned to increase effectiveness; you can now rename crew mid-game; each race has a small variety of colors which allows for easier visual recognition;

And more to come: We’re still balancing and polishing the features that are being added. Be sure to keep an eye out for additional content announcements!

FTL: Advanced Edition Recap:

  • It will contain a ton of new content and improvements: although the larger additions can be disabled if you prefer FTL “vanilla.”
  • This large update is free for those who already own the game on Windows, Mac, or Linux.
  • FTL is also coming to iPad; it will be the full version of the game including the new “Advanced Edition” content.
  • FTL on iPad will have to be purchased separately from the PC version.
  • An exact date for release has not been decided but we are aiming for early 2014.

We somehow managed to forget to mention this in our original announcement, but we’d like to thank Andrew Church (http://achurch.org/) for the brilliant work he’s done on the iPad port… and for putting up with us as we continue to delay to add new features. Developing a port alongside a big expansion would’ve been impossible without him as part of the team.

  20. These new layout C ships… will we have to unlock them? Because I still haven’t gotten the crystal ship yet, and now we have something else to make a beeline for?

Comment by ekimmak on December 21, 2013 at 3:05 pm

  21. “Doors and Sensors can be manned to increase effectiveness”
What is the exact effect of manning these systems? Will the doors be harder to break through? And manning the sensors?

Anyways, great work. Lanius race sounds really cool. Will their health be the normal 100, or more/less?

Can you yet reveal anything more than “early 2014″? January-February or later?

  22. is a release date already known?

  23. I don’t think that requiring metals would act as motivation to dominate other races, if that was your intent. There are much more metal-rich asteroids and satellites zinging around space than even earth contains. Catching random vessels would be a waste of time in comparison to strip mining some of those space masses.

  24. will you please make an android port!? that would be awesome, my house is strongly anti-apple so it would be awesome on the Google Play Store

  27. This copied from the FAQ:
Will there be any updates or sequels?

Right now there are no plans for updates or sequels, but it’s something we’ll be deciding at a later date.

  28. I love how at the end of the video trailer, the ship was seen in the background (and in the transition to the black screen) surrounded by scrap (as they are scavengers). I’ve been waiting so much for this since the first announcement! I can’t wait to see how it turns out, and I especially want to see how the modding community reacts. FTL is growing, and I LOVE it. I have almost 150 hours clocked in and I can’t wait to put in a few hundred more!

  29. “8 of the original ships will have a third layout.”
    Which ship won’t have a type C? D:
    I sure hope it isn’t crystal…
Then again, the default ship is amazing with Type B so i really want to see that with a type C…
The new race doesn’t get a type C either? :(
I’m assuming that you need 3/3 achievements to unlock this new type, but the 2 ships with no type C will stick out like sore thumbs. :(

  30. I don’t care how long it takes for the Advanced Edition to get to us. In fact, taking longer might even be better – because the less you rush it, the better the final piece will be!
Thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into this wonderful game . . . and please don’t mind our bright-eyed stares as we sit here (yes, right here – staring at you) in anticipation of the Advanced Edition. We’re not crazy. Just devoted. And excited.
    *inches closer*
    Reeeally excited.

  34. I’m very glad to see that you’re putting out an update. This is one game that I’d actually be willing to regularly pay for an expansion pack if offered new surprises.

  42. Any plans for multiplayer/co-op eventually? it would be intense.. i could definitely see some co-op 2v2 ship battles, or even the option to go separate across the sectors.
