In regards to YouTube’s Monetization Policy

The question has come up before so I just wanted to clarify our stance:

We, Subset Games, hereby declare that all YouTube users have our permission to run advertisements for the purpose of monetization on their videos of our game, FTL: Faster Than Light.

- Justin Ma & Matthew Davis (founders)

Hopefully that is sufficient evidence for them.  Thanks!

EDIT:  This also applies to other video services besides YouTube, such as, but not limited to, Twitch.tv.

  1. Very good! As I saw Total Biscuit’s WTF of your game I became very interested in the game and will probably buy it on release. But I do wonder about your pricepoint. Are we talking $15+ or lower? I am not using kickstarter so I didn’t have the change to buy it from there.

  2. I AM THROWING MY WALLET AT THE SCREEN, BUT IT DOESN’T SEEM TO BE WORKING.

The 14th can’t come soon enough.

  4. You guys just gained so much of my respect. I’ve been wondering for a while why more publishers don’t take advance of this free advertisement. Before I made gameplay videos let’s plays we’re the reason why I bought several games, and now that I do make them I gives me so much more incentive to actuaslly make a video that I know I can monitize.

Thank you so much! You are truly on the cutting edge.

  6. Free advertising and giving permission for them to make money off of it = the game gets spread out faster and wider area’s because they want more money on the ad’s so they work harder, win win for all.

  8. This is excellent news! I’m not sure if I would do any sort of series on this game, but I definitely want to do at least one video on this game, to show off how much fun it is (judging from what I’ve already seen, of course)

I can’t wait to actually play and get my very own ship destroyed!

  11. This is the perfect kind of game for watching on YouTube and it’s a smart move on your part by endorsing videos due to FTL’s randomness factor. You see the gameplay and think “I want to see what happens when I play”. It’s one reason Minecraft videos are so popular; every game is different and there is not plot to spoil. I flat out refuse to watch videos of games I wish to play if they’re plot driven. Of course I fully understand why developers of plot heavy games would have umbrage with YouTube videos spoiling or revealing the story they worked so hard on which also has the issue of potential customers forgoing a purchase of the game and instead watching a video of the cut-scenes and story, but in this case YouTube can only do good and spread the word of this (hopefully) amazing game.

  14. While I admire your stance on monetization, I’m not certain it matters. Youtube have some rather strict ideas surrounding monetization and anyone who wishes to do this sort of thing still needs to be part of a network. Anyone outside of a network chosing to display ads will only be generating money for youtube, not that that is an entirally awful thing but still.

Very much looking forward to getting my hands on this game though, only 4 hours left.

  16. Yep, this is pretty awesome. They posted this in response to my questions. Now if only YouTube would actually let one of my FTL videos monetize… *sighs*

  21. I thought you guys made an awesome game and then put it on GoG….but nooooo you had to go one step even further and be awesome as a developer and allow people to show-off how awesome your game is…you guys are absolutely amazing!
P.S. best spent 50 hours++ (so far) of my life as a gamer.

  25. I bought the game immediately after watching NorthernLion’s “Let’s look at …”, and, oh my, this game is goooooood. Only minor thing is that I’d love to be able to slaughter my friends in this fine game, so here’s hoping for multiplayer somewhere down the road. That being said, I’m sure I’ll end up spending hours upon hours playing single player anyways. :)

  26. I bought the game right after watching Cubehamster’s Let’s Play series. So your decision to allow such videos definitely pays off.

  29. I can add further corroboration to validate your decision to allow Youtube users to upload videos of your game without any hassles .
I watched a very short Let’s Play series of FTL from a Youtuber (PressHeartToContinue) and had decided to purchase your game before I even got halfway through the video.
I must say I do not regret the decision. I have even picked up a gift copy for a friend on Steam . That one gift copy might even turn into a couple before all is said and done.
This game truly is great fun.
